Planting a hanging basket
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO
GUIDE YOU THROUGH MAKING UP A HANGING BASKET

- Select the size of wire basket you want to use,
the larger the basket the more plants you will be able to
put in and the more colourful it will be.
- Choose a suitable liner, either a commercially
available liner or moss. Line the basket with your chosen
liner at this point it should be about 1" above the
top of your basket. If using moss cut out a circular
shape disc from a compost bag and place in the bottom,
this will help with water retention (depending on basket
size this disc should be big enough to come up the sides
slightly).
- Fill with compost to about the half way mark and
add water retention granules and slow release fertiliser,
mix into compost and water well.
- Now you can add the side plants ie lobelia,
impatiens etc, make a small hole in the liner or moss and
insert plant root first through the hole you have made,
remember that the roots must be sitting in the compost. A
lot of side plants fail due to not being inserted fully
through the liner and into the compost.
- Add more compost to about 1" from the top,
but making sure compost is upto the edge of the basket at
the sides only. You can now start adding your main
plants, begin at the centre working your way out to rim
and firming plants in. Ensure compost slopes into the
centre of the basket this aides watering, but do not
overfill your basket with compost, water in the plants.
- Now infil in spaces left with chosen plants ie,
border lobelia, nemesia, impatiens or petunias etc.
- Once your basket has settled the liner or moss
will have shrunck to fit your basket, any excess on a
liner can be trimmed, any excess moss can be teased down
the sides.
- Hang in a greenhouse or conservatory to grow and
fill out. Harden the basket off before placing outside on
a suitable bracket after the last frosts.
