Originally used by ancient Britons to paint their bodies. It was once cultivated for the blue dye that can be extracted from the leaves. Harvest the leaves when fully grown. Habitat grasslands. Yellow flowers. Prefers a well drained fertile soil in a sunny site. Biennial Isatis tinctoria - Dyer's Woad, Dyers-Woad Hgt up to 100cm Flowers June to August
