Medium to tall, annual or biennial found in woodlands, hedgerows, meadows, pastures and verges. Flowers July to September and are small white or pink. The fruits, which set from September onwards, are a purplish brown and covered in hooks. Attracts pollinating insects. Best sown autumn to allow winter to break seed dormancy.
