Runner Bean
(Phaseolus coccineus)
Sow outdoors after last frost, use a cane structure trellis or wigwam 22cm between canes, in rows 60cm apart to support beans. Sow in rows 5cm deep 1 seed per cane. Sow indoors mid April or in situ May/June. Harvest August to October. Keep well watered and feed weekly. Tip; runner beans have approx. 80% germination rate sow a few extra beans along the row for transplanting out later.

Climbing Beans
Yard Long Bean

Annual climbing bean, pod length up to 3ft normally eaten when pods reach 1ft (30cm). Ideal plant for the children to grow. Outdoors grow in a sheltered sunny spot ideally against a south facing wall or indoors under glass. Starts to flower and form pods after mid-summer. Pods are at their best

Sow yard long beans early in the season in pots/modules and germinate at a minimum 15C grow on under glass and plant out in warmer areas after last frosts, when plants reach approx 10cm. In cooler climates yardlong beans can be grown in a conservatory or tunnels, great plant for the children to watch the pods grow. Space plants 15cm apart 60cm between rows, provide support. In cooler climates they are best picked when young and succulent, cut to 3-5cm in length for cooking. Pods may not reach a yard long in cooler climate of the UK.

Hgt 45cm Very productive compact bushy plants yielding black and white tasty beans when mature. Pick Ying Yang young for fresh green beans or leave to mature and dry out to reveal the black and white beans.  Dried beans can be used in stews, casseroles etc. Sow early May onwards.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
