Sowing Information Quercus
You will require:
· A plant pot around 12cm diameter
· Small stones
· Damp soil and peat mix: around two thirds soil to one third peat
1. Place the stones in the bottom of the plant pot so that water can drain out freely without the soil being washed out of the drainage holes.
2. Fill the pot to 7cm from the top with the damp soil/peat mix.
3. Press down on the soil to make it firm (but don’t press too hard).
4. Place the acorn on top of the soil.
5.
Cover the acorn with about 5cm of soil.
6. Press on the soil to make sure that it’s in contact with the acorn. The soil now wants to come to about 2cm from the top of the pot. This lets you water easily.
7. Place the pot in natural light out of draughts. The acorn should preferably grow outside so that it is used to varying temperatures. If you grow it inside make sure that you toughen it off before it is planted outside.
8. Keep the soil damp all the time, but do not keep the soil wet or the seed might rot.
9. Once you plant the seedling outside in the field make sure that you water it well during the first summer. This will make sure that its’ roots develop well before it experiences drought conditions.
The cultural
information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number
of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different
sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind
you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already
have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule
of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and
fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
