There are many Acers suitable for growing into Bonsai as single specimens or in groups, and in many forms from slanting, windswept, informal root over rock. Acer description refers to the parent tree, in many cases the seeds will produce seedlings which differ from the parent tree many may be quite unique. Maples in containers.
Acers Prefer a moist rich well drained soil, in full sun or partial shade with
shelter from winds to prevent leaf burn. Acers grow well in
containers/pots due to their fine fibrous root system, they prefer their roots
tight and compact so do not over pot them. The size of Maples can be governed by
the pot size, when you reach the size required stop at that pot size. Do not let
Maples dry out during the summer months.
Seed from Acer palmatum may not always come true to the parent tree, many will
produce a range of variable seedlings, many may be unique.

| Scarification :- The germination of some
seeds is greatly improved by rubbing the seeds lightly between two sheets of
sandpaper or soking in water to break down the hard coating which prevents
the seed from imbibing moisture. Stratification :- Tree seeds have to be subjected to a period of cold and warm stratification to break their dormancy before germination takes place, as it would normally in the spring. You can provide the period of cold by adding the seed to damp sieved peat, sand or vermiculite and putting it in a plastic bag in the fridge for 2-32 weeks dependant on species. |

The cultural information should be
used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for
the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With
this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already
have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the
larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia
Begonia etc requires no cover.
