Welcome to our winter 2012
newsletter
Autumn 2011

As it is a bit too cold and wet to do any
gardening outside in December the children have been busy drawing pictures for
the Garden Club 2012 calendar. Some of
the children drew pictures and some made collages using photos from seed
catalogues.
In January we were lucky enough to reach the
final of the Molendinar Awards in Glasgow. We went to the presentation ceremony at
Glasgow City Chambers which was very impressive. Unfortunately we didn’t win a
big prize but we were highly commended, we are hoping to do better next year
now that we know what is involved. You
can see our video entry for the award at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjxRcYhz.

Here are the children that came with us to the
presentation. The photo was taken before
we went in, Jake who is in Primary 3 enjoyed it but did say we had to do a lot
of waiting about before anything happened!

Now
that it is February we have been out into the garden. It has been very stormy
this winter and we have a lot of tidying up to do before we can start planting
vegetables and flowers into our pots in the spring.

The girls are busy
planting some shrubs that we received from the Woodland Trust. It was a bit cold but they managed to get the
dogwood planted before the bell went!

The Thursday group
of the Garden Club are going to Gardening Scotland 2012. They will be entering the Pallet Garden Competition.
They plan to make a sensory garden similar to the one we are building in the
playground. We last entered Gardening Scotland in 2010 and won a bronze award
this years’ group hope to do even better than that!
As
well as the shrubs we have been given a Royal Oak sapling from a Royal Estate
to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. We have decided that nice as it would
be to plant the oak tree in the school it would grow too big for a pot or
planter. So we have asked Poppy and Rosie’s Dad who is chairman of Garnethill
Community Council if we can plant the tree in Garnethill Park. Fingers crossed that they agree to this idea.

We have planted up some colourful pots with
spring bulbs to brighten up the front of our school. The front of the school is very dark and
doesn’t get very much sun but we are hoping these colourful pots filled with
spring colour will brighten up the area.
Look out in our next newsletter for a story about an unusual arrival in
the plant pots!
