Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter.

We are a School garden club in a Primary School in the centre of Glasgow.  We started the Garden Club two years ago with no garden and no money.  As you can see from the picture above we have managed to find a space to grow lots of things in pots and planters!  We have also managed to raise some money for our garden from grants and from cake baking, always a popular activity with the children.

We meet twice a week before school and all the children are very enthusiastic about gardening.

Here are some reports from our Garden Club members.

Livia’s Report

I love gardening club because we get to plant all sorts of things.  For example, we recently dug up potatoes.  We also do things like weeding and planting bulbs.  Doing this makes our school look much nicer.  We also planted seeds in the bottom part of juice cartons which we brought in from home; this is good because we are an Eco School.

Fara’s Report

Garnetbank Primary School is collecting Morrisons’ gardening for schools vouchers for their beautiful school garden.  We have lots of plants and trees in the garden but would like to grow more in a raised timber bed.  So far we have 519 vouchers we need 1,400 so please keep collecting the vouchers and put them in special post box outside the janitor’s office.  The more vouchers we collect the prettier our school will look.

Woodland Trust

We are also members of The Woodland Trust and are Nature Detectives.  This means that every week we get a nature challenge and if we complete the challenge we put a sticker on our nature chart.

Here is Rosie’s report on a scavenger hunt that she completed in the half term holiday with her sisters, Poppy and Holly.

I thought the scavenger hunt was great fun!  Some things were hard to find such as an acorn, two different colours of leaves and the sound of a nut falling to the ground.  Some things were easy to find, winged seed parachute seed and an oak leaf.

It was a sunny autumn day when we went to Palacerigg Country Park to do the hunt.  The weather made it even more fun.  (A big thank you to Holly, Rosie and Poppy’s Mum and Dad for taking them on the scavenger hunt!).

We also had to colour in pictures of fungi for one of our challenges, here are Eli’s lovely pictures.
