Looking after your hanging
baskets
Here are a few tips to help you
get the most out of your basket through the summer
- Purchase or ask for controlled release fertiliser
to be mixed into the compost, this will release the
nutrients according to the temperature.
- Keep your basket watered well and remember as the
plants grow they will require more water. Check the
moisture content of your basket by checking the weight -
the lighter the basket the more water it will require.
You can also check the moisture content by taking a small
sample of compost from below the surface and squeeze, if
no water seeps out Water It !
- During the summer months try watering during the
evening as less evaporation will take place at night.
Always remember that during very hot summer months you
will probably have to water 2 - 3 times a day, the hotter
it is the quicker the basket will dry out.
- When watering ensure you give enough water to wet
the volume of compost in the basket all the way through
and not just the surface, also very important is
drainage, if there is inadequate or blocked drainage the
plants will become water logged and rot.
- Do not be fooled into thinking its raining - I do
not have to water today You Do. As the plants grow their
leaves form a canopy over the compost and this keeps the
rain off where it is needed the most - the compost. So
even if it is raining you have to water your baskets,
this also applies to baskets in sheltered or shady
places.
- Ensure that the bracket for your basket is
adequate and securely fastened to the wall and that the
bracket is the correct size for your basket. Check yearly
on your bracket, as like most things it will weather and
age with time.
- Liquid feeding - little and often even if you are
using controlled release fertiliser is recommended, this
will help to keep your plants looking healthy and at
their best.
- Placing the basket in a sheltered position away
from exposed situations will prevent the wind from drying
out your basket and damaging plants.
- To ensure your basket is at its best all the time
- remember to dead head regularly.
