Evergreen shrub
Melaleuca alternifolia - Medicinal Tea Tree
Having no culinary properties, medicinal provides an essential oil , a herb that produces a strong antiseptic from the leaves. Tea Tree is effective against fungal infections. Used for the treatment of thrush, verrucas, nits and cold sores. The oil is also used in aromatherapy. Also used in the production of soaps and deodorants. Sow thinly indoors/greenhouse on the surface of moist compost, stand pot in water to ensure compost is kept moist, do not water overhead to prevent damping off. Grow on indoors for the first winter. Tee Tree is not frost hardy and needs a minimum of 15 deg C (I have seen a minimum of - 3 deg C stated in some articles) best suited to indoor/greenhouse or conservatory plant. Suitable for growing in containers. Grow in moist soil in full sun.
General Sowing information: Herb seeds can be sown from early spring onwards, when the ground has warmed up they can be direct sown. All herbs come complete with germination instructions.
