Glycyrrhiza glabra - Licourice
Is used as the source for Liquorice powder that is used commercially for sweets, baking, ice cream and drinks, it is also used to disguise the taste of some medicines. The Egyptians used this plant for its healing properties and is one of the most widely used in Western Herbal Medicine. Magical powers of fidelity, love and lust. The dried root of Glycyrrhiza glabra is sometimes used as a teething and teeth cleaner. A tea is made from the roots. Roots are used at the 3-4 year stage.
Seed germination is low and irregular, seeds require scarifying (nicking hard seed coat with small file or sandpaper and pre soaking for 24 hours prior to sowing. Sow Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) in spring or autumn under glass/cold frame and grow on in greenhouse for the first year. Plant out after last frost in deeply dug fertile moist soil in full sun. The root is harvested in the autumn. For good root development and harvest prevent plant from flowering.
