STANDARD FUCHSIA

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH GROWING A STANDARD

  • select a strong unstopped cutting preferably with triple leaves off the leaf axil. using 3 leaves will increase the amount of shoots.
  • Stake the young plant and tie it at rgular intervals to maintain a straight stem. Pinch out any side shoots, as they develop at the leaf axil. As the plant grows you may have to slacken off the ties to prevent them cutting into the standards stem. Continue to remove side shoots untill you produce a nice straight stem.
  • When the standard reaches the height you require let the plant produce three sets of side shoots (do not pinch out these top three side shoots) and then nip out the growing tip. This will encourage the three sets of side shoots to grow.
  • On a triple leaf axial plant you will have 9 side shoots. Pinch these out when they reach 2 sets of leaves, and then pinch those out when they make 2 sets of leaves, keep going untill you have formed the head of your standard fuchsia.
  • The leaves on the main stem should drop off by themselves when the standard fuchsia has formed its head.
  • You must remember to over winter standards in a greenhouse or conservatory as frost will kill off the fuchsia head.
