Aquilegia Seed germination and cultural information

Plant type: Hardy perennial

Uses: Garden, pot production

Plant Height: 15 cm

Sowing: Give a cold treatment of 4 ºC for 8 weeks to the sown seed before moving the seed to 20 ºC can make germination more predictable.

Cover with a thin layer of fine vermiculite

Germination 2 - 3 weeks. Germination can be erratic and double sowing is probably needed for plug production

Approximate crop timing:-

Sowing to flowering Sowing August flowering May

Sowing October flowering June onwards

After germination to seedling transplanting 8 weeks

Growing on:

Temperature After seedling: night temperature minimum 15 – 18 ºC to increase plant size and build up root growth.

To over-winter: drop temperature to just frost free night 2 ºC and 7 ºC or below for day.

After plug transplanting in Jan/Feb keep temperature at a minimum of 15 ºC to get establishment then drop temperature as before. Cold period essential to promote flowering.

Grow on for about 6 weeks to sales time at 15 – 16 ºC to finish crop.

pH 5.5 - 6.2

Pot size 9 - 10cm

Advice Sulphur fungicides can cause a phytotoxic reaction. Keep dry and well ventilated during cold growing periods.
